ABSTRACT

In this study, we aimed to evaluate the halitosis and pain threshold of the peri-implant soft tissues in individuals rehabilitated with implant-supported prostheses. Forty-eight subjects were divided into four groups (n = 12) according to their prosthetic rehabilitation: single-tooth fixed prosthesis, multi-tooth fixed prosthesis, overdentures, and the Brånemark protocol. Halitosis was measured using a halimeter, whereas the pain threshold was measured using Von Frey monofilaments. Measurements were taken before (t0) and 30 days after (t1) placement of healing caps, and at the time of (t2) and 30 days after (t3) prosthetic placement. Halitosis data were analyzed using the chi-square test and Bonferroni correction (p < 0.05). Two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (p < 0.05) were used to analyze pain threshold data. We noted an association between halitosis and time for the Brånemark protocol [X2(6) = 18.471; p = 0.005] and overdenture groups [X2(6) = 17.732; p = 0.007], and between halitosis and type of prosthesis only at t0 [X2(6) = 12.894; p = 0.045]. The interaction between time and the type of prosthesis significantly interfered with the mean pain threshold values (p = 0.001). At most time points, the majority of participants in each group had clinically unacceptable halitosis. After 30 days of using the prostheses, the overdenture group had a lower pain threshold compared to the Brånemark protocol group.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To evaluate whether customizations of mandibular complete dentures (relining and restoration of the vertical dimension of occlusion) influence the electromyographic amplitude of the masseter and temporal muscles, maximum bite force and oral health-related quality of life of edentulous individuals. Materials and methods: Complete denture wearers who wore the same pair of dentures for more than 5 years were included (without temporomandibular dysfunction) (n=15). Assessments of quality of life (Oral Health Impact Profile for Edentulous OHIP-EDENT), maximum bite force, and electromyography of the masseter and temporal muscles were performed at 5 different times (T1 - original old dentures; T2 - after 18 days of wearing relined mandibular denture; T3 - after 18 days of restoration of the vertical dimension of occlusion; and T4 and T5 - 30 and 100 days of wearing new complete dentures. Results: There were no significant differences between the time points for all electromyographic and maximum bite force tests. The OHIP-EDENT showed that relining can contribute to greater adaptation of the mandibular denture and patient comfort (T2), in contrast, T3 was associated with patient discomfort (p<0.05). Conclusion: Based on the assessment of quality of life related to oral health, the reline of the mandibular complete denture caused an increase in masticatory comfort for the patients, and the previous definitive restoration of the vertical dimension of occlusion caused discomfort for patients. The electromyographic amplitude showed that the customizations performed in this study did not significantly increase or decrease masticatory effort. In addition, all observed maximum bite force values were within the clinically acceptable range(AU)

ABSTRACT

This paper relates two clinical cases where patients were recovered with a palatal splint made after oncological surgeries. Survival of patients and necks can occur, however, some deformities can occur during oral and maxillofacial treatment, such as the appearance of teeth, palate structures, mutilations or posterior jaws, leading to changes in aesthetics, surgery and swallowing. If the need to perform a prosthetic rehabilitation is necessary so that the results are seen with less problems, psychological and physical, that more procedures are performed so that the effects of neoplasms are contraindicated by the treatment. This type of prosthetic rehabilitation with prosthesis or obturator plate provides benefits in phonetics, facilitates social coexistence and nutritional activities such as eating and swallowing, allowing the patient a life with less constraints. Patients of different genders and with similar oral and nasal communications received the same rehabilitation plan that were made from a mold that was sent to the laboratory. After installation, it was possible to verify that the treatment was successful, noting an immediate improvement, proving the effectiveness of the rehabilitation method(AU)

ABSTRACT

SARS-CoV-2 (or 2019-nCoV) is the novel Coronavirus that affects humans. It originated in China at the end of 2019 due to the consumption of animals contaminated with this pathogen. SARS-CoV-2 causes the disease known as COVID-19 (coronavirus disease - 2019), and until May 21, 2020, approximately 213 countries and territories had been affected by SARS-CoV-2. The objective of this study was to review the origin and characteristics of this virus (SARS-CoV-2), symptoms and diagnosis of COVID-19, treatment of people with COVID-19, forms of transmission of the SARS-CoV-2, and precautions in dentistry. A literature search on PubMed/Medline was performed on the May 21, 2020, using the keywords (Mesh terms) "COVID-19" or "SARS-CoV-2" or "Coronavirus" associated with "dentistry" or "dental care" or "oral medicine." SARS-CoV-2 articles about the origin and characteristics of this virus (SARS-CoV-2), symptoms and diagnosis of COVID-19, treatment of people with COVID-19, forms of transmission of the SARS-CoV-2, and precautions in dentistry were included. The search was expanded according to necessity. Articles related to precautions in dentistry and SARS-CoV-1 or MERS-CoV were also selected, since precautions used in the dental clinic to avoid these viruses also apply to SARS-CoV-2. In addition, the references cited in the publications of articles included were also considered when appropriate. There was no limit in relation to the year of publication, and only articles written in English were included. In this study, suggestions for the safety of dental professionals were also included. Forty-seven articles and nine websites were included in this review.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the influence of three pigment incorporation methods on color change, dimensional stability, and detail reproduction of the MDX4-4210 and A-2186 silicones. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The A-2186 and MDX4-4210 silicones were used for preparation of samples, with the incorporation of bronze, black and pink pigments, usingconventional, mechanical, and industrial incorporation methods. Samples were submitted to the initial readings of color (n = 10; 22-mm diameter × 2-mm thickness), detail reproduction, and dimensional stability (n = 10; 30-mm diameter × 3-mm thickness). Readings were also taken at the end of 252, 504 and 1,008 hours of aging cycles. RESULTS: Quantitative data were evaluated by ANOVA and Tukey test, with a level of significance of 5%. The mechanical and industrial methods caused smaller color changes of all samples compared with the conventional method (p < 0.05). In most cases, the mechanical and industrial methods caused less samples' contraction than the conventional method after aging (p < 0.05). The color change values increased progressively in each aging period for all samples (p < 0.05). The contraction values increased progressively in each aging period for all samples (p < 0.05). In the qualitative analysis of detail reproduction, all samples presented full reproduction of the three grooves, with accurate angles, initially and after the aging periods. CONCLUSIONS: The industrial and mechanical methods showed the best results for color and dimensional stability. Despite the statistical differences, all pigment incorporation methods generated acceptable dimensional and color changes of the MDX4-4210 and A-2186 silicones, regardless of the pigment and aging. In addition, the detail reproduction was satisfactory after aging periods in all cases of this study, showing the excellent quality of the A-2186 and MDX4-4210 silicones.

ABSTRACT

The objective of the present case report was to describe the aesthetic and functional rehabilitation of the upper anterior incisors of a patient with bruxism. A 23-year-old male patient, with bruxism, sought treatment for his upper anterior teeth due to diastemas and reduced lengths of the upper central incisors. The gingivoplasty and osteotomy were performed in the region of the upper central incisors to improve the positions of the gingival contours and increase the length of these teeth. After 90 days, teeth whitening was performed. After 1 month the composite resin veneers were made in the upper central incisors. During treatment, the needs and perspectives of the patient were considered to achieve clinical success. The treatments were finalized, and the final result was satisfactory. Therefore, an integrated treatment plan proved to be extremely important, especially when the patient is adequately informed of the available treatment options and collaborates with the treatment.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The use of a gingival displacement cord with a gingival displacement substance is a common procedure for taking a quality impression of the cervical terminal in teeth for prosthetic purposes. Objective: To evaluate whether the mechanical-chemical method with 0.05% tetryzoline hydrochloride or 25% aluminum chloride is capable of reducing crevicular fluid, and displacing a statistically significant larger quantity of gingival tissue vertically, compared with the mechanical method (without chemical substances). Material and method: Ten patients were selected, and then No. 000 and 1 Ultrapak cords were randomly positioned on teeth 13, 21 and 23. Group I - cord with no chemical substance; Group II - cords impregnated with tetryzoline hydrochloride and Group III - cords impregnated with aluminum chloride. Using dental stone models, thirty images were captured with a camera coupled to a loupe to analyze the degree of gingival displacement. Crevicular fluid was quantified using a high-precision scale and individualized strips of absorbent paper for each tooth on which gingival displacement was performed. Result: There was no statistical difference between the three groups relative to the amount of vertical gingival displacement (Anova, p=0.26). As regards reduction in crevicular fluid, there was no difference between the test and control groups (Wilcoxon and Friedman, p < 0.05). Conclusion: The use of tetryzoline hydrochloride or aluminum chloride to impregnate the gingival displacement cord did not improve the quantity of vertical gingival displacement and did not reduce the amount of crevicular fluid.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Oral rehabilitation in edentulous patients is a challenge that the current dentistry has been trying to overcome through osseointegrated implants. The socio-economic factor is still a cause of the greatest difficulty for treatment in edentulous patients. In this case report we describe the association between extension project and interdisciplinary care for the rehabilitation of a patient with low financial condition. This study reports the case of a 55 year-old patient who complained about sensitivity in some teeth, discomfort with mandibular removable partial denture, masticatory and phonetic difficulties, as well as poor aesthetics. The purpose of restoring function and aesthetics for a better life quality of the patient, a treatment involving various dental specialties was conducted. After the evaluation of a interdisciplinary team and further discussion with the patient about possible treatment plans, it was decided to extract the mandibular teeth and placement of five dental implants. For the prosthetic rehabilitation Bränemark protocol was made on the mandibular region which had little bony ridge, and a new maxillary removable complete denture. In the end of the treatment there was evident aesthetic and functional improvement and the patient regained self-esteem and the will to care of his oral health. Based on this case report it can be noted that Branemark protocol is a viable choice for the treatment of edentulous patients and it is indicated in cases that there is little alveolar ridge to confer prosthesis stability.(AU)
